Chapter Fifteen

Anthony doubted he had ever felt happier in all his life. In fact, it was as though he was the richest man in all of England, and the reason had everything to do with Miss Mary Shepherd. The woman had captivated him from the first moment he saw her in the river. Over the past month, he had grown fonder of her, for she was a truly amazing woman with wonderful insight and wisdom.

He had never met a woman like her before, and he wanted to continue calling on her. In the past, he used women for his own pleasure, often discarding them as one would uneaten scraps from a meal. Yet, Mary had challenged him in his thinking, and he felt a new man.

Now he only wished to further the relationship they had formed, and courting was the next obvious step. When he had tested the waters by asking his question about her thoughts on courting, he was pleased by her response.

Tomorrow he would make a surprise appearance at Sweetspire Estates, for he could no longer hide what he felt inside. Doing such a thing threatened to place an unfavored view on him, but he would take the chance if it meant winning over Mary.

Taking a sip of his brandy, he pushed aside the business ledger in which he had been working. Not only had he changed his views of women, but also how he looked at his brother. For too long, Henry had carried the burden of managing the finances and the estate, and it was time for Anthony to step up and take the role for himself. Henry would marry one day, perhaps even Mary’s chaperon, but he would use Anthony’s need of him as an excuse to delay asking the woman, and Anthony could not have that on his conscience.

He yawned, and though the hour was early - the sun had not yet set - he was tired. The truth was, he had been sitting for much too long. He pushed his chair back and stretched, tiny cracking releasing the muscles in his back. Much better. Now he would go search for Henry and share the good news of his plans for tomorrow and the business matters he had taken care of.

Standing outside the door to the drawing room, however, he stopped at the sound of a woman’s laughter. When Anthony opened the door, he was met with a surprising sight - Henry with his arms wrapped around the waist of Nancy Jordon, Mary’s companion.

When they saw him gaping at them, Henry pulled away, and both reddened considerably.

“I did not realize you had a guest this evening,” Anthony said, trying to hide his amusement. So, they had become quite close, these two. Good for Henry!

“I did not expect it either,” Henry said. “Unfortunately, Nancy will be gone for some time to visit a sick aunt. She was thoughtful enough to stop by and see me before she left.”

Anthony nodded. “I’m sorry to hear about your aunt.
